4th Grade Projects:

Each 4th grader has spent HOURS breaking plates J gluing the pieces onto terra cotta pots (donated by Emily Thompson from All Seasons Garden shop) and finally a day of extremely fun and messy grouting. Next, Emily Thompson is helping us fill the pots with soil and plant some vibrantly green and wispy wheat grass that will be ready just in time for our Art Show. Your child is so very proud of their MOSAIC CONTAINERS – and - rightfully so. This was a big and lengthy project for them! In addition, each class has a Guest Artist who was inspired by the children and has created a mosaic piece of art to be for sale the night of the show.

Mrs. Key’s Class: The Guest Artist for this class is our very own, Katherine Sjoblom. Besides coming up with this wild idea in the first place, Katherine has been my right hand man for this project and rolled up her sleeves many a day to help the children. Katherine felt inspired to create Mosaic Fairy Balls from recycled bowling balls and they will be the focal point for this classes arrangement of their containers and will also be for sale the night of THE SHOW! Mrs. Nicholson’s Class: The Guest Artist for this class is Beth Inglish. Beth felt inspired to create a stunning mosaic table that JR found for us. The glass used in the table if from the job site of Covenant Presbyterian Church that is under construction in Green Hills. Our local architect, David Harper designed the church and salvaged the glass from the stained glass artist. Beth spent over 25 hours choosing the colors, breaking the glass, and adhering it to the table in a radial pattern that glows from the inside out. Ms. Foxx’s Class: The Guest Artist for this class is Camilla Spadafino. After helping sixty children mosaic and grout their terra cotta planters Camilla went on her own mad mosaic frenzy and mosaiced a bird bath with three beautiful Koi swimming around inside the basin. The glass used for this piece is also from the church our local architect, David Harper designed. The stain glass artist set aside his scraps, which were recycled into Camilla’s birdbath. It is shiny, swimmy and sure to catch your eye and capture your imagination.

Herb Williams helped each child in this Kindergarten class to create these self portrait sculptures to contribute to our school community and help raise funds for our Art Department. Mrs. Lurie’s Class Guest Artist: Herb Williams

This fabulous Self Portrait Sculpture is made of all recycled materials and was created and donated to Lockeland Design Center to help raise funds for our Art Department. It's value in an art gallery is $750.00. A reserve must first be met to win this piece of art.

Herb dreamed up a garden project created from all recycled materials! Parent’s donated license plates, blots, bottle caps, and other found metal objects to give them a new life as Ms. Lurie’s Kindergarten Self Portrait Sculptures. Michelle worked with this class to create Mixed Media Butterfly Sculptures on recycled vinyl records. They were cut into butterfly shapes and then sculpted to “take flight.” Each sculpture features a photo of the children for the butterflies face. Thank you to all of you who brought in their old vinyl records – they are singing a new song now! Michelle created a mixed media painting on wood with vinyl records as flowers. It is now available at the show.

Fourth Grade Art Club Guest Artist: Rob Hollett

Rob designed a wooden mobile, inspired by Alexander Calder, to hang in the fairy garden. The Collective Muse Artist Group helped plan the mobile by creating a model based on the wooden pieces. Rob then assembled the wooden pieces with handmade hardware. The students made their own wooden piece by sanding and painting a wooden shape. Rob’s mobile is for auction in The Fairy Garden! A rserve must first be met to win this piece of art.

The mobil is in the process of being hung from the tree on our Lockeland Front Lawn. It is a gift to our school from the 4th Grade Art Club and Rob. David initially inspired the children with his travel Collage Book that he creates while flying. Next, he took modern, oddly shaped wood and instructed the children to collage all over them. After varnishing, David inspired the children with another technique, Joan Miro’s famous line drawings. Each child also did an ink drawing over their collage. Although this creation will be one large piece working in unison, each piece will be sold separately and disassembled after the show. Each child will have a treasure in their Collage on Wood with Line Drawings in Ink. David’s own collages will be for sale.

He took oddly modern shapes of wood and had the children and himself collage over them. Mike is a sculptor who works in limestone. He visited the children’s class and showed them how to chisel, inspiring them with examples of his work. After he left, the students created Miniature Japanese Zen Gardens in the shape of a basin. Mike created his own version of a “Wabi Sabi” basin out of limestone to go along with these projects. Mrs. Kessler’s Class | Guest Artist: Michelle Sharp

Michelle visited our art class countless times and lovingly obsessed over each child’s beautifully, detailed, hand painted Hex Sign. Hex Signs are a Dutch tradition typically found on barns in the NE. Hex Signs are not about a curse as their name suggests, they are actually a blessing! The children painted their own one of a kind piece with loving thoughts of their family. Michelle then surprised us with her own extra large version of a Hex Sign to go along with the children’s work!

The Pennsylvania Dutch designed geometric signs that would immitate the moon, stars and suns on their barns in the early 1900s. The signs were called Hex Signs which symbolized good luck, prsperity and good fortune in their crops from year to year. This handpainted Hex Sign by Michelle Sharp mimics the 12 - point star, a good luck symbol is added for a good life. The colors black, white, green, puprle, blue, orange, brown, red anf yellow signify protection, purity, fertility, growth, peace, abundunce, mother earth, passion, and a healty body.
